I Ran for Joann

5k & 2 Mile Walk

in Memory of Joann Waldo

Who is Joann Waldo?

Joann Waldo was born on August 19th, 1953. She graduated from Forest Park High School in 1971 and in 1972 she married her high school sweetheart, Jim Waldo. When Jim became paralyzed after a work-related accident Joann poured every ounce of herself into caring for him and to say she excelled at it would be an understatement. Joann not only cared for Jim, but also the patients she worked with during her time at the Crystal Falls Manor and Medicare where she retired in August of 2015 as a restorative aid. Two months after Joann’s retirement her husband Jim passed away and Joann began the grieving process. Two short months after this heartbreak she became ill herself and searched for answers and treatment for over 5 month. Finally, in May of 2016 Joann was diagnosed with a rare disease called Amyloidosis and, despite treatment, the disease progressed so rapidly that Joann passed away on July 18th, 2016. The passing of Joann was and still is heartbreaking to any and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Joann carried the weight of the world on her shoulders yet never let it show. She was a dedicated wife, daughter, sister, auntie, great aunt, and friend. Her smile was contagious and her love for others was endless. Joann’s passing has left an empty and sad spot in the heart of many, but once a year we will formally come together to celebrate her life and her legacy of compassion and love during the “I Ran Joann” 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk. The goal of this event will be to not only honor Joann’s legacy, but also raise awareness for the disease in the hopes of enhancing diagnosis and treatment for those affected.
